Whitesbog, New Jersey: Abstract Macro

Monday, May 12th, 2008

This past Saturday, I was finally able to carve out a block of time to photograph. I woke up early to drive there for sunrise, but the clouds were too thick to see the sun coming up. I was surprisingly okay with that, since lately I have wanted to take some abstract macros. I found a nice little oak (?) tree covered in water droplets and began to shoot it. While repositioning to try a new angle, I looked back into my viewfinder and found the composition below. I was not even shooting the grasses there, so I’m considering this shot a gift from God (Well, all my shots are…but this one in particular). In the uninspired photographic “slump” I have been in the past few weeks, I needed a little Divine intervention.

Manasquan Reservoir: Leaves & Sand Patterns

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

Having no previous plans for today, I decided to get up for sunrise to shoot at the reservoir. Once I parked the car and got my gear together, I noticed the clouds were not going to let the sun come through this morning. It had rained the day before and a few times this past week, so the water level was much higher than it has been lately. Unfortunately, the tree stump shown in my post a few days ago is now a few yards into the water. The overcast sky did not work out too well for any landscape ideas I had, so I changed gears to small detail shots. The rain from the day before made fascinating patterns in the sand, uncovering spots of different colored sand. The grass that grew during the summer and early fall is now dying, making for a carpet of brilliant orange color. For much of the morning, I scoured the ground for any potential subjects I could find in the orange grass or red sand. Posted below are two leaves I found: One on this awesome red sand and the other covered in pine needles.

Cassie

This is Cassie, my 3 year old yellow Labrador retriever. I have decided she is the most adorable yellow lab I have ever seen. She would chase a tennis ball for hours if you kept throwing it for her. This morning, I was playing with her and I noticed that the backyard looked pretty nice all covered with leaves. I grabbed my camera and a dog treat and tried to get some shots of her running back with the ball. I didn’t end up with any ‘keepers’ from that bunch, but I took this before I ran out of treats. I hope you enjoy it.
